Our steady growth, combined with a strong commitment to innovative research and groundbreaking surgical techniques, has led Kleinert Kutz to establish several locations in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

History

Harold E. Kleinert, M.D., started a hand surgery clinic in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1953. Joined by Joseph E. Kutz, M.D., in 1964, they formed the organization now known as Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center. Kleinert Kutz surgeons have performed a number of the world’s firsts.

We Performed the World's First

  • Nation’s and world’s first successful hand transplant
  • Nation’s second, third, fourth, and fifth hand transplants with the most recent done on November 24, 2008
  • First reported repair of a digital artery
  • First reported successful technique for flexor tendon repair

Significant Achievements

  • One of the world's first cross hand replantations
  • Pioneered work in primary reconstruction using free tissue transfer
  • National award for research in blood flows to the nerve
